Origin
Shih Tzu puppies originate from China and were traditionally royal dogs for over a thousand years. In Tibet, they were bred by monks with others similar breeds such as the Lhasa Apso. It was not until the 1950s that the Shih Tzu puppy was brought to the West where they quickly became a popular breed.
Shihtzu Puppy Appearance
Shih Tzu puppies are small and sturdy with a long double coat. They are usually between 8 and 11 inches at the withers and weigh between 9 and 16lbs in adulthood. Generally, a Shih Tzu will have black eyes, lips and noses. Their all over colour can vary and include white, back, silver, liver, red and blue. Many will have a combination of some of these colours. These dogs can live to be 16 years old.
Temperament
Shihtzu puppies are playful and lively dogs. However, as with most small breeds, they can display behavioral problems if they are spoiled by their owners too much. This could include excessive barking, snapping and separation anxiety. Training the Shih Tzu puppy firmly will result in a well-behaved and loyal companion.
Health Issues
Unfortunately, Shihtzu puppies are prone to certain health problems. These include:
• Renal dysplasia (kidney disease)
• Back and knee problems
• Breathing issues
• Obesity (due to overfeeding)
Care
